Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Happy New Year everyone. This is the first episode for our 2025 season!
Today I want to introduce Emma Bentzen Koehler. Emma Bentzen Koehler, was an entrepreneur and president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1858 to her parents, Ulrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bentzen and Helene Henriette Sophie (Garrels) Bentzen. Her parents emigrated from Hanover Germany to St. Louis during the late 1830s. Her mother died in 1860 from heart disease at the age of 48. Her father would go on to marry Marianna Bertha Wiebe in 1862. During her childhood in St. Louis, she and her siblings participated in German-American cultural events and associations, including the turnverein movement. A Turnverein is a gymnastic or athletic club that originated in Germany in 1811. The term comes from the German words turnen, which means “to practice gymnastics,” and Verein, which means “club, union”. Her father would pass away in 1882 at the age of 76. Emma's early years in the U.S. were shaped by her immigrant experience, learning the value of hard work, cultural adaptation, and business acumen.
